The Day of the Lord:

 a Day, a Year

NOTE: Fill in the blanks verbally to help cement the facts in your heart and mind.

TIMELINE:

What does the Bible teach us about the Church

and the Day of the Lord?

HEB 10: 24,25  “...spur one another on toward love and good deeds. Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another--and all the more as you see the Day approaching.”

We are to look forward to the Day of the Lord because the Coming of the Lord announces it. As Jesus comes down and gathers believers to himself, the door is opened for the Day of the Lord’s wrath to fall on all wickedness and evil.  For God did not appoint us to suffer wrath but to receive salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ. He died for us so that, whether we are awake or asleep, we may live together with him.” 1 Thess 5:9,10

as we await The Day of the Lord,

which begins when true believers are taken up at Christ’s second coming.

Commands and Promises for the Church

2 TIM 4:8  “Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day--and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.”

PHIL 1:6,9,10   “Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.   My prayer is that you abound in love...and insight... that you may be able to discern what is best and be pure and blameless until the day of Christ…”

1 PETER 2:12  “Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us”.

2 TIM 1:12   “I know whom I have believed, and am convinced that he is able to guard what I have entrusted to him for that day.”

EPH  4:30,32   “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listendo not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.  Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.

PHIL 2: 15,16   “...you shine like stars in the universe as you hold out the word of life--in order that I may boast on the day of Christ that I did not run or labor for nothing. DAN 12:3 “And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever and ever.”

2 COR 1:14    “...you will come to understand fully that you can boast of us just as we will boast of you in the day of the Lord Jesus.”

1 COR 3:13-15 “...his work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each man's work. If what he has built survives, he will receive his reward.  If it is burned up, he will suffer loss; he himself will be saved, but only as one escaping through the flames.”

ROM 13:11,12   “...our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed.  The night is nearly over; the day is almost here. So let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light.”

LUKE 21:25,27,28,31,34-35  “There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars. On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea. At that time they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near. Even so, when you see these things happening, you know that the kingdom of God is near. Be careful, or your hearts will be weighed down with dissipation (self-indulgence), drunkenness and the anxieties of life, and that day will close in on you suddenly as a trap.  It will come upon all those who live on the face of the whole earth. Be always alert and pray you have strength (not fear)...”

The Day of the Lord comes immediately after the rapture, wherein transformed believers from all nations are caught up into heaven and praise God around His throne!  (1 Cor 15:42-58; Rev 7:9-10). As God’s judgment is poured out on the unrepentant world, (Rev 8,9 and 11:15-19) we may be staying in the mansions/rooms Jesus has prepared for us in heaven, as described in John 14:2,3 and Isaiah 26:19-21.

After the Trumpet Judgments, the Bible says, “...there were loud voices in heaven, which said: “The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Messiah, and he will reign for ever and ever.” (Rev 11:15)  the Bible seems to indicate that Jesus leads the remnant of Israel back to Jerusalem and protects them as the final Bowl Judgments are poured out on the Beast’s kingdom and all who have received his mark.  EZE 34:12,30 “As a shepherd looks after his scattered flock when he is with them, so will I look after my sheep. I will rescue them from all the places where they were scattered on a day of clouds and darkness. Then they will know that I, the Lord their God, am with them and that they, the Israelites, are my people, declares the Sovereign Lord.” (Jer 31; Isa 35; 51; 30:27-33; Zech 10)  ISA 4:2-6 “On that day the Branch of the LORD (Jesus) will be beautiful and glorious, and the fruit of the land will be the pride and glory of Israel’s survivors. Whoever remains in Zion and whoever is left in Jerusalem will be called holy— all in Jerusalem who are recorded among the living— when the Lord has…cleansed the bloodstains from the heart of Jerusalem by a spirit of judgment and a spirit of fire. Then the LORD will create over all of Mount Zion and over her assemblies a cloud of smoke by day and a glowing flame of fire by night. For over all the glory there will be a canopy, a shelter to give shade from the heat by day, and a refuge and hiding place…” The Bowl Judgments (Rev 16) are complete destruction poured out on the earth, thus a need for a refuge and hiding place over all of Mount Zion (Israel).

The 6th Bowl makes ready the way for the armies of the world to Armageddon, summoned by demonic spirits. (Psalm 110) The 7th Bowl pours out huge hailstones and a massive earthquake and the final destruction of Babylon the Prostitute, a wicked, compromising and influential religious spirit. (Rev 17,18) She is described in Revelation 17:6 I could see that the woman was drunk with the blood of the saints and witnesses for Jesus.” God puts it in the heart of the Beast to hate her and throw her down (most likely at the 3 ½ year mark, when he demands total allegiance to himself). so he has no competition. (Rev 17: 16-17)  Then, according to Revelation 19, the wedding of the Lamb is announced (Jesus and His bride, the church) and guests are invited (maybe the nations that make it through the Year of the Lord’s redemption and wrath?) It seems plausible that before the wedding supper takes place, the Battle of Armageddon is fought, the Beast and false prophet are thrown into the lake of fire and the Dragon (Satan) bound. (Rev 19:11-21;20:1-3; Zech 12 )  Then we will truly be able to celebrate for 1000 years and forevermore! (Rev 20:1-3; Isaiah 2) For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this.” Isa 9:6,7

What does the Bible teach us about the Day of the Lord?

1.  The day of the Lord is a day of vengeance,  a year of retribution when God pours out His w________ on the unrepentant nations, because of their evil and their hatred for Israel.

ISA 34:2,4,8-9 “The LORD is angry with all nations; his wrath is upon all their armies. He will totally destroy them. All the stars of the heavens will be dissolved and the sky rolled up like a scroll all the starry host will fall… For the LORD has a day of vengeance, a year of retribution, to uphold Zion's cause.”  Rev 6:12-14  “I watched as he opened the sixth seal. There was a great earthquake. The sun turned black like sackcloth made of goat hair, the whole moon turned blood red, and the stars in the sky fell to earth… The heavens receded like a scroll being rolled up…”  (Jer 30:6; 1 Thes 5:2,3; Isa 13:6-13; Habakkuk 2)

How can a day be a year? Daniel 9:27 speaks of the final ‘week’ (7 Years) leading up to the end. Perhaps “a day...a year” is telling us that the Day of the Lord’s wrath is that last day/year of this 7-year ‘week’ ?

2. Israel will have suffered greatly during Antichrist’s reign and even feel some of God’s wrath in the Trumpet Judgments (after the Church departs). The Bible says that the remnant will mourn after they see Jesus take his church home and they will finally repent and believe in Jesus as their Messiah! God brings them redemption and everlasting s____________.

ISA 51:22 “This is what your Sovereign Lord says, your God, who defends his people: “See, I have taken out of your hand the cup that made you stagger; from that cup, the goblet of my wrath, you will never drink again.”    JER 30:11  “I will discipline you but only with justice; I will not let you go entirely unpunished.” ISA 61:2 “...to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor and the day of vengeance of our God, to comfort all who mourn…” (Dan 12:5-13; Isa 59:15-21)  ZECH 12:10   “And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and supplication. They will look on me, the one they have pierced, and they will mourn for him as one mourns for an only child, and grieve bitterly for him as one grieves for a firstborn son.”  ISA 45:17 “Israel will be saved by the Lord with an everlasting salvation; you will never be put to shame to ages everlasting.”  ROM 11:25-27 when “...the fullness of the Gentiles comes in then all Israel will be saved. As it is written: “The deliverer will come from Zion; he will turn godlessness away from Jacob. And this is my covenant with them when I take away their sins.”  ISA 62:11; 63:3-4 "The LORD has made proclamation to the ends of the earth ... ‘See, your Savior comes! See, his reward is with him, Who is this, robed in splendor...?  “It is I, speaking in righteousness, mighty to save.” I have trodden the winepress alone; I trod them (Israel’s enemies)  down in my wrath... For the day of vengeance was in my heart, and the year of my redemption has come.” (see also Zech 8:1-8, 12:1-14;  Joel 3:9-21; Rev 14:14-20, Isa 43:1-21; Psalm 149)

Halfway through the last 7 years, those in Israel will be attacked and the Antichrist will take over the temple. Some will be dragged away to other nations (Luke 21:23,24, Dan 11:31-36), some will be hidden by God (Rev 12:13-17) some will be sealed as firstfruits, a promise that more will survive and be saved, and some will be deceived and follow the Antichrist (Rev 13:8,14; 2 Thess 2:9,10). Sometime after the church is taken up in the rapture, the remnant of Israel will be led back to Jerusalem and repent, receiving God’s salvation through Jesus Christ. This could happen at the 7th trumpet in Revelation 11:15 The seventh angel sounded his trumpet, and there were loud voices in heaven, which said: “The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Messiah, and he will reign for ever and ever.”  (see also Rom 11:25-27, Zech 12:9-11; Isa 35, Jer 33:14-26)

3. Underline whose wrath is seen in that Day. Who executes God’s judgment? Jesus  (the Lamb)  the Word of G____.

REV 6:14-17  At the lifting of the 6th seal the world says “...hide us from the presence of Him who sits on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb;  for the great day of their wrath has come’…” The 7 Trumpets release God’s wrath, then come the 7 Bowls poured out, “with them God’s wrath is completed.” Rev 15:1  The 6th Bowl dries up the Euphrates so armies can cross for the Battle of Armageddon. (Rev 16:12-16) The armies are struck down by Jesus.  REV 19: 13-15, 19-21  ...his name is the Word of God (Jesus in John 1:1). The armies of heaven were following him, riding on white horses and dressed in fine linen, white and clean. (see 1 Thes 4:4) Out of his mouth comes a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations. “He’ll rule with an iron scepter.” He treads the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God Almighty. Then I saw the beast and the kings of the earth with their armies assembled to wage war against the One seated on the horse, and against His army. But the beast was captured along with the false prophet, who on its behalf had performed signs deceiving those who had the mark of the beast and worshiped its image. Both the beast and the false prophet were thrown alive into the fiery lake of burning sulfur. And the rest were killed with the sword that proceeded from the mouth of the One seated on the horse.”  (Rev 17:14; Zech 14:9-14; Isaiah 13:29:5-8, 30:19-30, 33:5-24; 54:4-15)

4. Why does God’s wrath come?  Unrepentant  h______s that choose evil over good, self over God.

ROM 2:5  “But because of ...your unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath against yourself for the day of God’s wrath, when his righteous judgment will be revealed. COL 3:5,6“...sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. Because of these, the wrath of God is coming.” (also Rev: 9:21, Isaiah 8:19-22)

5. Are Christians going to experience God’s wrath?          Yes      No

1 THES 5:9,10 “For God did not appoint us to suffer wrath but to receive salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ. He died for us so that, whether we are awake or asleep, we may live together with him.”  Rapture! (Rev. 6: 12-17; 14: 9-20)

6. How do we escape God’s wrath?  Circle the answer in John 3:36

John 3:36  “Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God's wrath remains on him."

7. Who experiences God’s wrath?  Underline the answer above.

ISA 2:21 “They will flee to caves in the rocks and to the overhanging crags from dread of the LORD and the splendor of his majesty, when he rises to shake the earth.”  13:13 “Therefore I will make the heavens tremble; and the earth will shake from its place at the wrath of the LORD Almighty, in the day of his burning anger.”

REV 6:12-16 “I watched as he opened the sixth seal. There was a great earthquake. The sun turned black like sackcloth made of goat hair, the whole moon turned blood red, and the stars in the sky fell to earth...every mountain and island was removed...The sky receded like a scroll...Then the kings of the earth, the princes, the generals, the rich, the mighty, and every slave and every free man hid in caves and among the rocks of the mountains.  They called to the mountains and the rocks, “Fall on us and hide us from the face of him who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb!”

LUKE 21:25,26 “There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars. On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea. Men will faint from terror, apprehensive of what is coming on the world..”

EZEKIEL 38:18  “In My zeal and in My blazing wrath I declare that on that day there will surely be a great earthquake in the land of Israel... all the men who are on the face of the earth will shake at My presence; the mountains also will be thrown down…”

2 PETER 3:10-13   “But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything in it will be laid bare. You ought to live holy and godly lives as you look forward to the day of God and *speed (*σπεύδω: to urge on, desire earnestly. Biblehub) its coming. But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, the home of righteousness.``
